Rates FAQs

  • Council levies, rates and charges fund services for the whole community. When adopting its annual budget, Council will set rates and charges at a level that will provide for both current and future community requirements. You can view our Revenue Policy on the Publications Scheme Page (Under Policies)

  • Half yearly rates notices are issued in January and July.

  • In February and August each year.

  • Council offers a variety of payment plans to assist ratepayers to manage their outstanding rates debt. Short and long term payment plans are available to pay your outstanding rates balance in weekly, fortnightly and monthly instalments.  There are many benefits of having a payment plan including:

    • You choose how often to pay
    • No further action is taken to recover your debt (as long as you don’t miss a payment).

    Ratepayers are encouraged to contact council to enter into a new plan to clear all overdue rates and charges prior to the next rates notice being issued.

  • Yes, just email rates@gympie.qld.gov.au or call 1300 307 800 between 8.30am and 4.45 Monday to Friday to organise this.

  • To check if you are eligible for an undetected leak adjustment, please refer to council’s undetected leak allowance form. Council will then review your water consumption once we have received your application.

  • Yes, Ratepayers still receive 2 free tube stock trees/plants each rates notice. For full details on the program, how and where to claim your native plants please click here

  • You must be the holder of a current Queensland Pensioner Concession card or Department of Veteran Affairs Gold Card (all conditions) and the property must be your principal place of residence.

  • Eligible pensioners will need to complete the Pension Subsidy form.

    The completed form needs to be lodged in person at one of our customer service points. Remember to bring your pension concession card when lodging the form.

  • No, a Seniors Card holder is not eligible for a pension discount on rates.

  • Let’s start with information about the General Rate Category.

    Rates are based on one or more of the following:

    • The value of the land as determined by the Department of Resources
    • Primary land use
    • Land zoning as defined in council’s current Planning Scheme
    • Location within the region
    • Availability of services
    • What services are used.

    There is a minimum rate in all categories that considers the cost of providing common services.

  • If you do not think you are in the right rating category, you will need to complete the Objection to Rate Categorisation Form.

  • This charge will apply to you if your property is connected to, or can be connected to, the council sewerage network.

  • This charge will apply to you if your property is connected to, or can be connected to, the council water network.

  • Council charges water for each kilolitre used. Water meters are read six monthly and consumption charges are levied on the next rate notice. Refer to fees and changes for costs of water consumption.

  • This is a State Government charge and contributes to emergency management and fire and rescue services. This also includes vehicle entrapment, flood rescue and search and rescues.
