New Reservoir Strengthens Gympie's Water Infrastructure
Gympie Regional Council has recently completed a major water infrastructure upgrade with the construction of a new 4.5ML reservoir at Jones Hill.
This $3.5 million project, jointly funded by the Queensland Government's Building Our Regions program in association with Gympie Regional Council, enhances the region’s water supply, ensuring greater security and reliability for years to come.
Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig welcomed the project's completion, emphasising its long-term benefits for the community.
“The newly built reservoir, positioned alongside the original underground structure that has served the community well since the post-World War I era, is designed with modern engineering to make it stronger and longer-lasting", Cr. Hartwig said.
“As our region continues to grow, additional water infrastructure like the Jones Hill reservoir is essential to reduce pressure on our aging systems and ensure a reliable water supply for decades to come.
“I'd like to thank the dedicated Council staff who worked on this project, as well as the Queensland Government for their support to deliver this vital asset that has been sorely needed in our region."
Interesting construction facts:
- 900 tonnes of concrete were used in the build.
- 4.3km of high-strength steel cables were tightened with 1,300kN of force after the concrete was set, reinforcing the reservoir’s long-term resilience.
