Gympie Times: 27 September – Housing Crisis

QUESTION:

Can the Mayor please comment: Has a resident contacted him regarding the homelessness in Gympie?

ANSWER:

Council is very mindful of the growing homelessness issue that is not only being experienced throughout the Gympie region, but also throughout Queensland and Australia.

I know of a few locals within our community who are rising to the challenge of homelessness in our region and are exploring a range of services that could be offered to better support those who are down on their luck, and I am certainly very supportive of this work.

Council has been approach by concerned residents about this issue. We have said that we are very happy to have a seat at the table to explore options and develop solutions that will work best for our unique community, alongside other community groups and representatives with experience and expertise in this area.

Mayor Glen Hartwig

Gympie Times: 30 September – GRC Closure

QUESTION:
It's come to my attention the council's offices and gallery will be closed from midday until Friday morning.
Why are they shutting for the bulk of the day? Is it renovations? A staff-union thing? Something else?

ANSWER
The office closures are to allow staff to attend the CEO’s All Staff Forum which we do annually to bring everyone together to discuss a variety of matters including code of conduct, and health and safety.
Although Council offices are closed, residents can still call our friendly customer contact team on 1300 307 800.

Gympie Times: 1 October – Dangerous dog

QUESTION:

I was in court yesterday where a guy was found guilty for breaking into the Gympie RSPCA and stealing back his dog who was seized by the council to be destroyed. Only issue is, it wasn't said why the dog was seized to begin with.

Matter has been finalised. Dog was an American Staffy, under the name of Hewie or Chewie.

Just wondering if you can tell me why the dog was seized in the first place please?

ANSWER:

The animal was deemed to be dangerous due to its interaction with other animals and was therefore seized.
