Tagigan Road Widening

Tagigan Rd works Main image

The Tagigan Road Widening Project is set to begin in September 2025, enhancing a 2.3km section between Tin Can Bay Road and Nall Road. As part of the Roads to Recovery program, this project aims to improve road safety and functionality by addressing increasing traffic demands and infrastructure needs in the Gympie region.

Widening works will include
•    Widening the existing road
•    Stormwater drainage improvements
•    Vegetation clearing
•    Other associated construction activities

Project Timeline
The project is scheduled to commence in September 2025 and be completed by mid-2026, weather permitting.

Funding Information
This project is part of the Roads to Recovery program, which provides funding to support infrastructure improvements in local communities.

Why are these works happening?

Tagigan Road is a vital route for our growing region, with nearly 500 vehicles using it daily. The section identified for widening—between Tin Can Bay Road and Nall Road—is currently a 4-meter-wide single-lane bitumen road with gravel shoulders.

Increased traffic, weather impacts, and wear have increased maintenance requirements and reduced safety. The result has been a total of 43% of all customer requests relating to Tagigan Road over the past 5 years were about road condition, safety and signage.

To improve safety, accommodate growing traffic volumes, and reduce long-term maintenance costs, the road widening project was prioritised.

Thanks to funding secured through the Queensland Roads to Recovery program, Council can start work to improve Tagigan Road to meet the needs of our expanding community.

How is this being funded?

These upgrades are made possible through Australian Government funding of $2.4million from the Roads to Recovery (RTR) Program, which supports the construction and maintenance of the local road infrastructure assets, facilitating greater accessibility and improved safety, economic and social outcomes for Australians.

How long will construction take?

Construction is expected to commence in September 2025 and be finished by mid 2026, weather permitting.

This is an environmentally sensitive area and includes koala habitat, how is Council addressing this?

Council understands the environmental sensitivities along Tagigan Road. As such, and with a commitment to ensuring all environmental impacts are identified, Council engaged an environmental consultant to undertake an assessment of the area.

The preliminary design for road widening to 8m sealed road identified removal of over 50 trees including koala habitat trees (KHT) within the construction corridor.

However, with further advice from the environmental consultant and Council’s internal Environment Services team, the road design has been revised to reduce the total impact to approximately 10 KHT.

Measures to mitigate the impacts are in line with the South East Queensland Koala Conservation Policy and include:

  • Proposed Road width reduced to 7m (in line with the remaining sections of Tagigan Rd ) reducing the construction footprint. Install kerb and channel in areas of cutting to reduce construction footprint.
  • Overlay the road (increase the road centreline height to reduce construction footprint.
  • Replanting of juvenile KHT in consultation with Koala Action Gympie Region and Council’s Environment Services team
  • Option for landholders to be provided with juvenile KHT for replanting within their own properties.
  • Spotter/catcher to be onsite during tree removal works

Will I still be able to access my property?

Residents will still be able to access their properties. If works are being undertaken across driveways, residents will be advised.

I've been advised my fence is 'off alignment', what do I need to do?

Council has designed the new road on the existing road alignment within the road reserve and to minimise impacts to neighbouring properties. However, a small number of properties were identified as having a fence off alignment. This means your fence is outside your boundary and encroaching in the required work zone.

The fencing must be removed or rectified by the property owner prior to the start of construction.

If the fencing has not been corrected/removed, Council will carefully remove the fence and place all its components securely within your property. However, please note that reinstating the fence in the correct alignment will be your responsibility and expense.

How many vehicles use Tagigan Road?

Traffic counts along Tagigan Road have indicated and average of 500 vehicle movements per day.

What are the hours of construction?

Construction will be undertaken between 6am to 6pm.

How will traffic be managed?

Throughout the construction phase, we will strive to minimise traffic disruptions by maintaining road accessibility whenever feasible, although occasional delays may occur. We recommend allowing extra travel time when passing through this area.
