Public Interest Disclosure
Public interest disclosures (PID) are a provision to enable the disclosure of wrongdoing in the public sector that serves the public interest. Council is committed to encouraging the reporting of wrongdoing or misconduct within Council.
For an allegation to be considered a PID it must meet the terms outlined under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2010 and must be:
- public interest information about serious wrongdoing or danger
- an appropriate disclosure
- made to a proper authority
Any person, including a public sector officer, can make a disclosure about:
- Substantial and specific danger to health and safety of a person with a disability.
- Substantial and specific danger to the environment, caused by commission or an offence or contravention of a condition under environmental legislation
- Reprisal action (causing or attempting to cause detriment to a person because of, or in the belief that, a person has made, or may make a PID).
A public sector officer (Councillor or officer of Council) Can make disclosure about:
- Corrupt conduct
- Maladministration that adversely affects a person's interest in a substantial and specific way
- Substantial misuse of public resources
- Significant and substantial danger to public health or safety
- Significant and substantial danger to the environment
How to make a Public Interest Disclosure
A public interest disclosure can be made in any format, however it is preferable that they be made in writing and marked as private and confidential. In order for Council to review this disclosure sufficiently, please include as much information as possible. Submissions can be sent via:
