A night of State of Origin rivalry will bring western communities together in Goomeri this month following severe weather and flooding earlier this year.

Gympie Region Mayor Glen Hartwig, a proud Maroons supporter, and Cherbourg Mayor Bruce Simpson, a Blues fan, will attend a community State of Origin event at Goomeri Hall on Wednesday, 17 June.

The two Mayors will join the community for the live-streamed State of Origin game following two important Disaster Recovery Information Sessions that will be held in the afternoon on the same day in Tansey and Goomeri.

The information sessions are aimed at primary producers, rural businesses and residents and will provide advice on how to access recovery support, grants and other practical information to help recovery efforts after the impacts of this year’s floods.

The drop-in Disaster Recovery Information Sessions will be held at:

  • Tansey Show Society & Polocrosse Complex - 30 Tansey Hall Road, Tansey, from 1pm to 4pm.
  • Goomeri Hall- 17 Boonara Street, Goomeri, from 5pm to 7pm.

Support services available at the sessions will include:

  • Rural Financial Counselling Service
  • Grant information
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing Services
  • Land Management and Catchment Care
  • Support for primary producers and rural businesses

The State of Origin Game 2 live-stream at the Goomeri Hall is supported by Telstra and Gympie Regional Council and is free to attend. Goomeri Primary State School P&C will host a BBQ fundraiser from 6pm, ahead of kick-off at 8:05pm.

Gympie Region Mayor Glen Hartwig said the sessions are about helping people access support close to home while reconnecting communities after a difficult few months.

“Recovery isn’t just about rebuilding roads and fences, it’s about making sure people know where to turn for support,” Mayor Hartwig said.

“We know it’s been a tough time for many people across our western communities, so this is a chance to come together, have a conversation and access services that can help.”
