Community Flood Awareness & Education Project

Flood 2022

Flooding affects every community differently, which is why Council is working with priority communities across Gympie, Imbil, Jones Hill, Kilkivan, Monkland, Southside and Widgee to better understand local flood risks and strengthen community resilience.

In partnership with floodplain management specialists Synergy Solutions, Council is delivering a project focused on improving flood awareness and preparedness in flood-impacted areas across the region.

How this project can help you

This project is designed to help communities better understand local flood risk and improve disaster preparedness through practical education, local knowledge sharing and community-led planning.

Stage 1: Community Flood Awareness and Education Sessions

Community members are invited to take part in interactive sessions that will help you:

  • Share local knowledge and help shape flood awareness in your community
  • Understand how water moves through your local catchment
  • Learn how to use practical tools such as flood gauges and cameras to recognise flood risk, identify triggers and take early action
  • Build confidence and improve your understanding of what to do before and during a flood event

By the end of the sessions, you will have a clearer understanding of your local flood risk and practical knowledge you can apply during future flood events.

Stage 2: Community Flood Awareness Plans

Information gathered during the community sessions will be used to develop local flood awareness plans that:

  • Reflect local flood risks, impacts and community experience
  • Combine community knowledge with technical flood data
  • Identify the tools, triggers and actions most relevant to each community

The outcome will be a clear and practical flood awareness plan that communities can use to prepare for, respond to and recover from flood events.
