Gympie Regional Council has reinforced its focus on the region’s long-term financial stability, today adopting its Annual Report 2024-2025 and External Financial Audit Report.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said today’s adoption signified years of work behind the scenes to re-establish trust with the Queensland Audit Office (QAO) and clearly define a path forward with honesty and integrity.

“Ensuring we are responsibly handling every cent of ratepayer funding has been of critical importance throughout my time as Mayor, and today’s adoption allows us to move forward and get on with the job of delivering for our residents,” Cr Hartwig said.

“By establishing a clean bill of health and demonstrating our ability to progressively strengthen Council’s financial position of the last six years, we have been able to build trust and confidence with the QAO, and this continues to be the case.”

Gympie Regional Council had previously received Ministerial Approval to allow for an extension of time to deal with a new auditor coming on board and associated changes in reporting requirements.

These changes specifically related to the process surrounding historic grants recognition and allowed time for the new auditor to review Council’s statements and provide new information at the request of the new auditor.

Through this process, Council has also implemented improved practices which have seen Council’s disclosure around cash (and restricted cash) improve and become more reflective of Council’s financial position.

Cr Hartwig said the adoption of the Annual Report highlighted Council’s achievements in service delivery for the 2024-2025 financial year, focusing on critical infrastructure and planning for the future.

“Through the prioritisation of fixing our ageing infrastructure and addressing the current and future needs of the region, we are seeing great results in securing strong investment to help us on this huge journey ahead of us,” he said.

“We have already been successful in gaining a massive $42 million as part of the Queensland Government’s Residential Activation Fund, which will go a long way in helping us provide the core infrastructure needed to meet the growing needs of our region.

“This alone is a huge step forward for our Council, and we are now working quickly to progress some of these projects in the region.

“Every day our Council team is committed to a high standard of service delivery, and Councillors are now busy preparing our budget for the 2026-2027 financial year with the same focus on financial responsibility and planning for the future.”
