Gympie Regional Council is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Station Road and Mellor Street Signalised Intersections Upgrade, which has delivered safer, more accessible and better-connected roads in Gympie.

The upgraded intersections at Station Road/Tozer Street/Tozer Lane and Mellor Street/Chapple Street/Lady Mary Terrace are now open to traffic, featuring operational traffic lights, brand new line-marking and improved pedestrian and accessibility facilities.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig spoke of the benefits these upgrades will bring to the area.

“We know this project has been a long time coming and I thank the community for its patience as we completed the work,” said Cr Hartwig.

“This upgrade has been on Council’s list for a long time, and it was important we got on with the job.

“On top of addressing safety concerns, this project enhances accessibility, making this busy part of town easier to navigate for people using mobility aids, parents with prams, and elderly residents looking to access businesses and services in the area.”

Since commencing in April, the project has delivered on the following outcomes, made possible by funding of $419,000 under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, supported by complementary funding received from the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) and additional funding from Gympie Regional Council:

  • New traffic signals to two key Gympie intersections
  • New and improved accessible kerbs, footpaths, ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian access points
  • Upgraded road surfaces and drainage, included corrected crossfall
  • Enhanced on-street and public parking facilities
  • A new accessible ramp to the railway level crossing

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien congratulated the Gympie Regional Council on the works to improve safety and connectivity at the Station Road and Mellor Street intersection.

“The Australian Government’s Black Spot Program helps to reduce injuries and fatalities by providing funding to Councils so they can prioritise upgrades at dangerous locations where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring,” Mr O’Brien said.

“Black Spot funding enables the delivery of much-needed safety improvements including traffic signals and pedestrian crossings to make our local roads safer and keep motorists and freight moving.”

Member for Gympie, Tony Perrett MP, said the upgrades delivered a clear safety and accessibility benefit for Gympie.

“These were busy intersections that needed attention, and the completed works will help reduce risk and improve confidence for everyone who uses them – whether they’re driving, walking, using mobility scooters or pushing prams,” Mr Perrett said.

“Better lighting, line-marking, pedestrian crossings and accessibility features will have lasting benefits for locals who rely on these roads every day.”

As part of its commitment to improving both safety and accessibility, Council undertook a walk-through with Fiona Neagle of the Access Advisory Committee – Gympie Region prior to the traffic lights being activated.

“The Access Advisory Committee welcomes the infrastructure enhancements to intersections on Station Road, Tozer Street, Mellor Street and Chapple Street.” Ms Neagle, spokesperson for AAC Gympie Region, said.

“The Committee is very pleased to note the significant upgrades to safety for pedestrians navigating these streets to utilise local businesses in the area, particularly people who use mobility aids, those who have visual impairment, and their families and carers.

“Audible pedestrian traffic signals, a new access ramp across the railway line, much better off street designated accessible parking, and better footpaths will all make a huge different to people’s experience of this important retail area.”

While major works are now complete, some minor follow-on activities will be undertaken for mid-January 2026, weather permitting. These will include line mark capping and road widening works at Bent Lane.
