Gympie Regional Council is investing in ensuring more reliable and sustainable essential services for the region, with the endorsement of a major upgrade project at the Goomeri Water Treatment Plant.

Council awarded Protex Water Pty Ltd a $1 million contract to upgrade the Goomeri Water Treatment Plant. The works will enhance the plant’s performance and introduce a new softening process to improve drinking water quality for residents.

As part of the project, a trial aeration process will also be undertaken at Kinbombi Ponds, where Goomeri’s surface water supply is stored. The trial aims to improve water quality so it can be treated at the plant, which is not currently possible due to the presence of algal blooms.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said the project was the latest in a series of investments that aimed to address the region’s ageing water infrastructure.

“One of Council’s key priorities is the management and renewal of our ageing water infrastructure, which is essential as the region continues to grow,” Cr Hartwig said.

“As Council prepares the 2026/27 Budget, a range of projects have been identified for delivery. The projects align with the recently endorsed Water Security Strategy, which will guide investment in water infrastructure through to 2050.

“It also builds on a significant program of works delivered this financial year, with more than $56 million allocated to water and wastewater projects across the region, including the latest stage of the multi-year Water Network Main Renewal Program, supported through the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.

“However, to really secure a safe and reliable drinking water supply, we need our Federal and State Governments to be on board. Council’s newly endorsed Water Alliance Partner will help deliver improved water infrastructure services to support our region well into the future.  This makes us ready, right now, to take advantage of any investment from other levels of government.

“This investment will be key to securing trunk infrastructure that is reliable and secure for this Region. Our hard work in recent years, and ongoing, has built relationships with other levels of government, and we will continue to knock on those doors, representing the basic needs of our local community.”

Divisional Councillor Warren McEwan said the upgrades were an important step toward securing Goomeri’s long-term water supply.

“Once the upgrades are complete, residents will continue to receive a safe and reliable source of drinking water and may notice improved taste due to reduced hardness,” Cr McEwan said.

“As part of the broader program of Council investment into the region’s infrastructure, upgrades to the Goomeri Sewerage Treatment Plant will start later this year.

“These works will deliver a modern sewerage system with improved treatment processes and increased automation, resulting in a more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective service for residents.”

The works, fully funded through Council’s capital works program, are scheduled to begin in mid-June, with both water and sewerage upgrades expected to be completed by the end of 2026, weather permitting.

No service interruptions are expected during construction. Council will provide advance notice should any planned outages be required.
