Gympie Regional Council residents are stepping onto safer and more connected streets with the completion of 870 metres of footpaths in the CBD and a further 645 metre section of pathway now underway.

The completed footpath links Popes Road to the existing pathway on Louisa Street, and Myall Street to the pathway network on Pine Street while works are also continuing to expand footpath linkages on Rifle Range Road, linking Cootharaba Road and Wises Road once complete.

Funded by the Queensland Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS) in partnership with Gympie Regional Council, projects reinforce Council’s ongoing commitment to community safety and accessibility.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig said the partnership investment reflected Council’s focus on delivering practical infrastructure that meets the needs of a growing community.

“Footpaths are essential infrastructure that make a real difference to our community,” Cr Hartwig said.

“They improve safety, encourage people to head outdoors and get active, and help connect our neighbourhoods.

“With the current Rifle Range project is expected to be finished later this month, weather permitting, the region again gets to benefit from infrastructure that may not have been possible without a funding partnership approach between levels of government.”

The footpath infrastructure program is a small part of 192 km network of footpaths that Council maintains on an ongoing basis with $405,000 allocated this financial year for new and improved footpaths throughout the region.

"With Council currently developing its 2026/27annual budget and looking at ways to make each dollar go further in a tough global climate, we will continue to advocate to other levels of government for increased funding to deliver the infrastructure i needed to support a growing region.”

Council has started the development of walking network plans for Cooloola Cove and Tin Can Bay this financial year thanks to funding through the Queensland Government’s Active Transport Program.
