Coastal communities to shape new active travel options

Gympie Regional Council is partnering with the Queensland Government through its Active Transport Grants Program (formerly named the Walking Local Government Program) to develop walking networks plans and create a more connected and active community.
Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said the program would identify missing links in the footpath network and pave the way for future works.
“One of the best things about living in the Gympie Region is the ability to step outside and enjoy a beautiful and picturesque natural landscape – irrespective of the town you live in,” Cr Hartwig said.
“Through this Queensland Government program, we are looking at opportunities to improve pathway linkages – firstly focusing on Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove - and the first step is to gather insights from the community.
“This information will be used to build action plans that would be eligible for future funding opportunities and hopefully support an expansion of this program into more areas of the region.”
Division One Councillor Jess Milne encouraged the local community to be involved in upcoming engagement sessions and events.
“This exercise is about using local knowledge to firm up connections to shops, schools, and essential services in our part of the region, and there will be various ways residents can be involved across March,” Cr Milne said.
“Residents can contribute to the interactive map and survey on Council’s website, or attend upcoming engagement sessions at:
- Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers – Friday 20 March 2026 7:00am
- One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay Walking Group – Saturday 21 March 2026 6:30am
- Tin Can Bay Parkrun pop up session – Saturday 21 March, Wes Mitchell Park from 7:00am
“Council will also be conducting dedicated sessions with key stakeholders including schools, access advisory groups, and health and wellbeing organisations.
‘We’re excited to work with community to identify ways we can improve the lifestyle of all residents and visitors, and I encourage everyone to find out more and get involved.”
