Gympie Regional Council is pleased to share that construction works will soon get underway along William St, Imbil, marking a significant milestone in the Imbil Revitalisation project that began last year, with funding from Queensland Hydro.

Improved parking and road conditions were some of the clear priorities identified by the community during consultation in 2025 and are reflected in the Imbil Place Positioning Document, available on Council’s website. These works support the focus on improving parking, road safety, pedestrian connections and overall movement through the town centre.

What works are planned?
The project includes a range of improvements designed to deliver long-term benefits, including:

  • Road widening
  • Formalised on-street parking which will result in up to 90 additional parallel car parks
  • Improved footpath connectivity to Imbil town centre
  • Stormwater drainage improvements
  • Tree planting and open space rehabilitation

When will works start?
Works are expected to commence from 16 February 2026, starting with tree removal at the Selwyn St end of William St, followed by staged construction activities. Works are expected to be completed by end of June 2026, site and weather conditions permitting.

What to expect during construction
During the works, residents and businesses can expect:

  • Construction noise, particularly during tree removal and excavation
  • Temporary traffic changes, including reduced speeds and altered vehicle movements
  • William St operating as one-way for the duration of the works.

Under the temporary traffic arrangement:

  • Vehicles will be able to enter William Street from Yabba Creek Rd
  • Traffic will travel one-way along William St
  • Vehicles exiting properties along William St will be required to turn left onto William St

Access to properties and businesses will be maintained and any changes will be advised by crew on site as required.

Funding
This initiative funded through Queensland Hydro’s Community Benefits Program.

Will I still be able to access my property?

Residents will still be able to access their properties as works will be undertaken along the Golf Club side of William St.

What are the hours of construction?

Construction will be undertaken between 7am to 3pm weekdays.

Why are trees being removed as they provide shade and amenity?

Council recognises that the existing trees along the Selwyn St end of William St are highly visible to nearby residents and form part of the current streetscape character.

To deliver the required stormwater drainage, footpath and parking improvements, a number of existing trees, primarily Cadagi trees, along with a small number of Jacarandas already in poor health, will need to be removed, as they are located within the drainage alignment or unlikely to withstand nearby excavation works.

In planning these works, Council carefully balanced the need for safe, functional infrastructure with the importance of maintaining Imbil’s green and welcoming character. Community consultation consistently highlighted improved parking access, safety and connectivity as key priorities to support local businesses, events and everyday town centre activity.

Will removed trees be replaced?

To ensure William St continues to feel green and inviting over time, new, more suitable tree species will be planted along the street, alongside broader open space rehabilitation works across Imbil. These plantings will provide improved shade, amenity and long-term resilience as they mature.
