What is Varroa Mite?

  • Varroa destructor (Varroa) mite is a parasite that feeds on honey bees and reproduces in honey bee brood cells.
  • Varroa mites are the size of a pinhead and if left untreated cause colony collapse.

What does the presence of Varroa Mite mean to our region?

  • Varroa Mite was first detected in Queensland in March of 2025. It is now widespread throughout our region. The continued spread is reducing feral hive numbers, reducing pollination activity and causing economic impacts for bee keepers.
  • Mites resistant to synthetic pyrethroids and Amitraz based miticides have been confirmed in neighbouring local government areas.
