Avian Influenza
What is avian influenza?
- Avian influenza is a viral disease of birds. There are many different strains ranging from low pathogenicity (mild) to highly pathogenic (severe with high mortality).
- Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) spreads between wild and domestic birds by direct or indirect contact, and susceptible domestic birds include: chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl and quail.
- Birds with avian influenza may display a range of signs. For a list of these and further information visit The Queensland Government, Avian Influenza Alert.
What risk does avian influenza present to our region?
- HPAI continues to spread overseas with more than 60 countries affected in 2020 and 2021.
- Although Australia is currently free of HPAI, the risk of infection is increasing, and an outbreak could have serious social and economic impacts.
- It is important for anyone with birds to look, report and protect.
