Disposing of household hazardous waste safely is essential to protecting your family, your home, and the environment. Chemicals, paint, oils, and other hazardous products should never be poured down drains, dumped in the garden, or mixed with general waste.

To make safe disposal easy, Gympie Regional Council is hosting a free drop-off event at Bunnings Gympie on Saturday, 29 November, from 9am to 12 pm.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor, Glen Hartwig said the event provided a practical and accessible solution for residents wanting to safely dispose of hazardous household items.

“Properly disposing of household chemicals is something we all need to take seriously,” Cr. Hartwig said.

"I encourage all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to clear out old products from their sheds or garages, removing potential fire hazards and harmful substances that could be dangerous during severe weather events.

“Items taken to the drop-off point at Bunnings need to stay in their original containers, have lids, and not be mixed. This ensures everything is disposed of responsibly.”

A wide range of hazardous household products will be accepted, including insect sprays, metal polish and solvents, floor care products, brake fluid, motor oil, sump oil and gear oil, petrol and marine fuel, fungicides, insecticides, herbicides and weed killers, paints and mediums, dry-cleaning solvents, fibreglass resins, swimming pool chemicals, photographic chemicals, smoke detectors, and compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Residents can drop off their items at the north end of the Bunnings carpark, located on the corner of the Bruce Highway and Hall Road, Gympie. A 20-litre limit applies for each chemical or product.

Commercial quantities will not be accepted. For more information, including the full list of accepted items, visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/chemicals
