Properties may also be identified as a Local Heritage Place under the Gympie Regional Council Planning Scheme 2013. These properties are identified in Schedule 4 – Local Heritage Places and mapped in the Heritage and Neighbourhood Character Overlay. Where a property is identified in the Planning Scheme as a Local Heritage Place, this triggers the requirement for specific outcomes for building and new development to protect heritage values and preserve traditional character.
The Planning Scheme(PDF, 6MB) can be used to find out if your property is identified as a Local Heritage Place.
Council has two reference documents that it utilises to understand sites of significance throughout the region. Council’s Local Heritage Register(PDF, 23MB) has been the reference document to understand why a site is of local significance, and has been used to inform both residents and staff on why a site is considered important.
More recently, Gympie Regional Council has completed a Heritage Places Study(PDF, 48MB) to further improve its understanding of heritage sites throughout the region. The citations contained within the Heritage Places Study have built upon the Local Heritage Register, based on criteria requirements of the Burra Charter, whilst also expanding on the number and type of significant sites throughout the region
