Local volunteers celebrated as part of National Volunteer Week

As Australia celebrates National Volunteer Week from 18–24 May, Gympie Regional Council has paid tribute to its volunteers during a special morning tea at the Gympie Regional Gallery last week.
Over warm scones and cups of tea, Council staff thanked the organisation’s volunteers for the important role they play in welcoming visitors, sharing local knowledge, and supporting Council services.
Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said volunteers were the backbone of many services, programs, and community organisations that residents relied on every day.
“Our Region has almost 9,000 local volunteers who generously give their time to support the community,” Mayor Hartwig said.
‘Whether it’s running the canteen at the local hockey club, delivering meals to elderly residents, or planting trees to support native species, volunteers play a vital role in helping improve the liveability of communities across our region.
“The morning tea at the Gallery was a small way for Council to thank those who generously give their time to support Council services and help create welcoming spaces for residents and visitors alike.
“This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, Your Year to Volunteer, is aptly named and serves as a timely reminder to make this the year you put your hand up to give back to the community. So, find something you’re passionate about and give it a go. Even giving a small amount of your time can make a real difference, not only in your own life, but in the lives of the many people your support will positively impact.
“While National Volunteer Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate volunteers, their contributions make a difference in our community every day of the year.”
Volunteer opportunities are available across a range of local community organisations, as well as at Gympie Regional Council.
