Land secured for the future Gympie Regional Sports Precinct
Gympie Regional Council has taken a significant step forward in the provision of essential community infrastructure for the region with the securing of a site for Gympie's future Sports Fields and Indoor Sports Facility.
The precinct will be located on land bounded by Rodney Road, Chatsworth Road, and Widgee Crossing Road at Two Mile.
Council allocated $3.1 million in the 2026–27 Budget to purchase the site and to develop a business case and concept design to secure further funding for the staged development of the Regional Sports Precinct
Mayor Glen Hartwig said securing the land marked a significant milestone for the region, with a clear plan to seize opportunities ahead of the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
"As our community continues to grow, so does the demand for quality sports infrastructure. Right now, indoor space in our region is extremely limited, with Council operating just one indoor sports facility,” Cr Hartwig said.
"That's why today’s decision by Council is such an important step.
“We all agree that investing in our recreational facilities means investing in the health and well-being of our community. In this week’s budget, we allocated the funding for the first stage of this investment, so it is fantastic to be able to say today that, with the purchase of the land, we are ready to move into the next stage of planning a precinct that will benefit our community for decades to come.
"With the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, this project positions our region to take advantage of future opportunities while ensuring local sporting clubs and families have access to the facilities they need.
"This financial year we'll begin developing the concept design and business case, working closely with sporting clubs and the wider community to ensure the precinct reflects the needs of our growing region."
Mayor Hartwig said today’s decision demonstrated to the State and Federal Governments that Council had a clear plan for the future of sports and recreation in the region.
"We're committed to producing a solid plan that is shovel ready and look forward to working with the State and Federal governments to turn this vision into a reality for our community,” he said.
"Investing in our recreational facilities means investing in the health and wellbeing of our community, and this is about laying the foundations for future investment in our region and our people.”
Council has taken the first step towards securing the site, with a six-month due diligence period to be completed before the purchase is finalised.
To complement planning for the Gympie Regional Sports Precinct, Council is also reviewing its Open Space and Recreation Strategy and is inviting the community to have its say.
The updated strategy will establish a clear vision for planning, managing and improving parks, open spaces and recreation facilities across the region over the next 10 years.
