Gympie Regional Council is pleased to announce the successful completion of the final phase of the RSL Memorial Park Project, marking a significant milestone for the region’s commemorative spaces.

The project’s completion includes the installation of RSL Service Values Pillars, organised by the Gympie RSLA Subbranch, which complement the Memorial Flame installed last year. Together, these elements enhance the park’s role as a place of reflection, remembrance and community gathering.

The revitalised Memorial Park strengthens the region’s capacity to host major commemorative services, including ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day, ensuring a fitting space to honour those who have served.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig said the completion of the project reflects Council’s commitment to preserving and enhancing important community landmarks.

“This project ensures that Memorial Park continues to serve as a dignified and meaningful space for reflection and remembrance for generations to come,” Cr Hartwig said.

“We are proud to work alongside Gympie RSL to deliver enhancements that honour our veterans and support our community’s strong tradition of commemoration.”

The Gympie RSLA Subbranch President Adel Amin said the new pillars are a significant addition to the site.

“The completion of these works provides a fitting tribute to those who have served,” Mr Amin said.

“The pillars, alongside the Memorial Flame, create a powerful and respectful space where the community can come together to remember and reflect.”

The newly installed pillars, fabricated by artist Remo Vallance, are represented by the values of mateship, endurance, sacrifice and courage. Each pillar is engraved with words and phrases inspired by each value to evoke meaning, emotion and storytelling – told and untold.

Last year, in addition to the installation of the ‘The Rising Sun Badge’ inspired Memorial Flame, the second and third stages of the project included the realignment of a footpath and upgrades to Memorial Lane, including partial ground resurfacing, the planting of new trees and gardens and the repainting of walls.

This project was funded by the Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communication and the Arts, and all works were completed in accordance with Gympie Regional Council Operational Works Approval and State Heritage Approval.

Following the completion of these important works, Council will undertake further revitalisation of surrounding areas in the months ahead, with respective works information to be released at a later date.
