Gympie Regional Council has kicked off a major program to repair much-loved community infrastructure damaged by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred when it battered the coast in early 2025.

Part funded with $1.34 million from the Australian and Queensland Governments Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), the multi-year program will see repair and reconstruction works undertaken across several locations throughout the region, with the first stage of works to start at Rainbow Beach.

Initial reconstruction efforts started this week with erosion and stormwater management repairs at the Phil Rogers Park viewing platform. Beach and dune rehabilitation works will follow later this year.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig said the program marked an important step forward in the region’s ongoing recovery.

“Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred caused significant damage to a number of valued community assets across our region,” Mayor Hartwig said.

“These projects will restore important recreational assets that our community and visitors value. But the repairs are more than a quick fix – we are also ensuring the infrastructure is better equipped to withstand future weather events wherever possible.

“While Rainbow Beach is the first location to benefit from this funding, the recovery program extends well beyond the coastline.

“Future stages of the program will focus on restoring sections of the River to Rail Trail and the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail, with works currently scheduled for delivery in 2027.

“Our trail network delivers significant economic, tourism and community benefits for the region, so restoring these assets is an important part of ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”

The reconstruction program is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
