Gympie Regional Council is investing in the future of our city’s most loved community spaces through the Priority Building Asset Renewals Program – Gympie Central Business District, proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program.

As part of this program, the Gympie Library is receiving essential upgrades including a full reroof and replacement of the air-conditioning system. These improvements will protect the building from weather damage, improve energy efficiency and ensure a more comfortable, reliable environment for everyone who visits.

Works will include:

  • Removal of existing roof and installation of a new roof
  • New air-conditioning units

Timeline:

The works will take approximately 11 weeks and is scheduled for completion by early December, weather and site conditions permitting.

Impacts:

  • Library closure: Gympie Library will close from Tuesday, 30 September at 5pm and is scheduled to reopen by the end of November 2025, weather permitting.
  • Pop-up library:
    • Opens Tuesday, 7 October at 9am for a period of four weeks.
    • Location: Pavilion Conference and Reception Centre, Exhibition Road, Southside.
    • Services: Limited collection of resources, programs, computer access, and a range of books, magazines, and DVDs for borrowing.
  • Access changes during works:
    • The access road and car park on the right-hand side of the library will be closed.
    • The front footpath and parking spaces will remain open.
  • Parking:
    • Sections of the library car park will progressively reopen when the library reopens (weather and site conditions permitting).
    • Alternative parking is available at the Town Hall and Gympie Civic Centre.

The essential works under the Priority Building Asset Renewals Program – Gympie Central Business District, proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland Program, will restore much-loved community spaces, including the Gold City Stage, keeping them in great condition and ready for reading, catching up with friends and hosting community events.

FAQs

Is the library closed during the roof renewal works?

Yes. Gympie Library will be closed from Wednesday 1 October to Monday 6 October to complete the move to the Pop-up Library at the Pavilion. No services will be available from Gympie Library during this time.

 

Will you be operating from a different location?

Yes. A Pop-up Library will operate from the Pavilion Conference and Reception Centre from Tuesday 7 October at 9am for a period of four weeks, while crews replace the Gympie Library roof.

 

What are the operating hours of the Pop-up Library?

The operating hours will remain the same as Gympie Library:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9am–5pm
  • Thursday: 9am–7pm
  • Saturday: 9am–12pm

 

How long will the works take?

The works will take approximately 11 weeks. Gympie Library will reopen on Monday 10 November, however some works will continue on site until late December 2025 (weather and site conditions permitting).

 

I attend programs at the library. Will the programs still run? From where?

From Wednesday 1 October to Monday 6 October, no programs or workshops will be held at Gympie Library.

When will the Library reopen?

Gympie Library will reopen on Monday 10 November at 9am.

 

Will I still be able to borrow library materials?

Yes. A limited collection of materials will be available at the Pop-up Library at the Pavilion.

 

I use the computers and printing facilities at the Library – where can I still access these facilities?

Computer and Wi-Fi access will be available at the Pop-up Library.

 

Why can’t you stay open during the works?

The works will generate high levels of noise, require the removal of the air conditioning, and create potential safety risks. Closing ensures both staff and visitors remain safe while the project is completed.

 

Will parking access be impacted during the works?

Sections of the car park will be back in use when the Gympie Library reopens on Monday, 10 November at 9am (weather and site conditions permitting). Alternative parking will be available at the Town Hall and Gympie Civic Centre.

 

Are any other library branches closing during this time?

No. All other library branches; Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Imbil, Kilkivan and Goomeri, will remain open and operate at their normal hours.

 

Can I still make reservations at the Pop-up Library?

Yes. New reservations will be available for collection at the Pop-up Library from 7 October.

 

I have an item that is due during the temporary closure. How do I return it?

There will be a book drop location at Town Hall Customer Contact operating from 1 October, but we encourage everyone to visit us at the Pop Up Library at the Pavilion after 7 October to return their items.
