Gympie Regional Council will boost safety, accessibility, and improve traffic flow in Gympie’s busy CBD precinct, with a major upgrade of Reef Street (between Young Street and the River Road roundabout) set to kick off in the first week of August.
The $1.6 million upgrade will deliver a range of improvements including a full resurfacing of the street, reconfiguration of on-street parking, better footpath and driveway access and a new raised pedestrian crossing to improve the connection between Memorial Lane and Memorial Park.
Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said the project was another important investment in creating a safer, and easier to access CBD.
"This upgrade is another important step in the ongoing investment in our CBD which is about making it easier for people to visit, dine and shop,” Mayor Hartwig said.
“Together with the recent Gympie RSL sculpture project in Memorial Park, we're creating a more connected and accessible city centre in which people will want to spend time.
"Reef Street has become an important link in activating the CBD. It not only connects the CBD to our central green space – Memorial Park – it is also becoming a significant community event space and we have seen that recently when it became the street stage during Rally Queensland, allowing people to move easily and safely between the event and Mary Street.
“While there will be some inconvenience in the short term as the works are completed, I encourage people to be patient because the end result will l not only ensure the street continues to serve the community day-to-day, but will also provide a valuable, expanded event space in the heart of the city."
The Reef Street upgrade forms part of Council's ongoing commitment to improving priority infrastructure that supports the long-term growth, functionality and activation of Gympie's CBD.
Works are expected to commence in the first week of August and be completed by December 2026, weather permitting.
