Restoration works are set to begin in August on the culvert located at Cogzell Road, Wide Bay Creek Crossing.
Essential infrastructure was lost or damaged during the 2022 floods and temporary repair works were undertaken immediately after the floods, but over time, the culvert continued to deteriorate.
Due to the ecological significance of this waterway under the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Accepted Development Requirements, the new culvert must meet stringent environmental and engineering standards. An important requirement to meet compliance is that it must ensure the free passage of fish and maintain the health of the aquatic ecosystem.
Works overview
- A new 7-cell culvert system has been designed in accordance with government regulations
- The new structure will be constructed approximately 10 metres downstream of the existing causeway, allowing the current causeway to be used as a temporary side track to ensure continuous access for residents during construction
- Upon the completion of these works, the existing causeway will be removed to allow for improved environmental flows and fish passage, as is in line with the latest Planning and Fisheries acts
Timing
Initial minor pre-works to ensure there is a safe and solid foundation for the works to begin will be taking place in the coming weeks.
The restoration works are scheduled to commence at the end of August 2025 and are expected to be completed by late September 2025, subject to weather and approval timelines.
These works are jointly funded by the Australian and State Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRAF) administered by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA).
