A systematic property inspection program throughout townships and suburbs will be conducted for the duration of this Approved Inspection Program by Regulatory Services Officers of the Gympie Regional Council to determine the registration status of dogs.
The following residential and rural-residential areas may be subject to property and yard inspections:
Araluen, Carters Ridge, Chatsworth, Cooloola Cove, Curra, The Dawn, East Deep Creek, Goomboorian, Greens Creek, Gunalda, Gympie, Jones Hill, Kikivan, Goomeri, Mary Valley, Monkland, Mothar Mountain, The Palms, Pie Creek, Rainbow Beach, Southside, Tamaree, Tin Can Bay, Traveston, Veteran, Victory Heights, Widgee, Wolvi.
This Approved Inspection Program will be in force for a period of three (3) calendar months from 1 September 2025 until 30 November 2025.
Council advises that the current fine for an unregistered animal is $333.00.
Program overview
- House to house visitations to determine if animals are being kept and if these animals are registered
- Monitor compliance with dog registrations and identification and renewal requirements of the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008
- Monitor compliance with duty to provide proper enclosure and prevent animals from wandering of Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011
- Assist in addressing the increase in complaints in the region related to wandering dogs and dog attacks
- Assist in the collection of statistical data to provide an accurate record of the number of dogs in the region and maintain accurate information in the animal registration register
- Promote responsible pet ownership by requiring owners to register their animals and pay the appropriate fees; and providing information on enclosures, minimum standards and animals in public requirements
- Enable Council to identify the owners of lost and impounded dogs in a timely manner

Do I need to be home for the inspection?
No. If dogs are seen on your property and are unregistered, a notice may be left.
Can Council Officers enter my property?
Officers will knock or ring the doorbell but will not enter your home without consent. They may also legally inspect from yards or areas visible from the street.
Do I have to register my dog?
Do I have to register my new puppy?
Yes. There is a low fee of $20 applicable to puppies under 6 months, regardless of desexing status. This means owners can access the lower desexed registration rate whilst waiting for their puppy to reach a suitable age where it can be desexed. Please contact Council so these details can be recorded.
How do I register my dog?
You can register online at www.gympie.qld.gov.au or in person at the Council Office located at 2 Caledonian Hill, Gympie. You’ll need proof of microchipping and de-sexing.
What happens if my dog isn't registered?
A fine of $333 will be applicable for each unregistered dog.
