New speed limits to improve road safety in Gympie
Published on 16 July 2026
Gympie Regional Council will drop the speed limit in 40 local streets to align to State Government standards in built up areas and improve road safety.
The Gympie Traffic and Road Safety Committee, which includes the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police, Council officers and other transport stakeholders, approved the reduced speed limits after considering a range of factors including road function, surrounding development and current road usage.
For 38 of the 40 identified roads, the new speed limits align with the State Government standard of 50km/h speed limit on identified roads within built-up areas, and from 70kmh to 60km/h on two other local roads, all to support safer outcomes for all road users.
From Monday, 3 August 2026, council crews will progressively replace the speed limit signage. Motorists are encouraged to take note of posted speed limits as changes are introduced over the coming weeks.
Gympie Region Mayor Glen Hartwig said the changes were aimed at ensuring improved road safety.
"Speed limits need to reflect how roads are actually used and the environments through which they pass," Mayor Glen Hartwig said.
"The reduced speed limits are designed to improve safety for all road users and pedestrians while ensuring consistency across the network.
"As our region grows, we need to make sure speed limits keep pace with changing road environments and usage"
The Traffic and Road Safety Committee is an advisory body to Council and meets every quarter to review local road safety matters including speed zoning, traffic management and community concerns.
