Gympie Regional Council crews continue to keep communities connected through an extensive road maintenance and recovery program, despite nine declared disaster events since 2022.

Since July 2025, Gympie Regional Council has:

  • graded 264km of roads
  • used 540 tonnes of asphalt to patch potholes
  • repaired 5300m2 of asphalt pavement
  • resheeted 60km of unsealed road.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said Council had made significant progress to push through an extensive road recovery program, despite repeated weather events continuing to test the region.

“Safe and reliable roads are one of Council’s core services, and I’m incredibly proud of the work Council continues to deliver despite the significant challenges natural disasters present across our region,” Cr Hartwig said.

“During the November 2025 Severe Thunderstorms, crews responded to more than 100 storm-damaged sites, removing fallen vegetation from roads and road verges to restore safe access for the community.”

“The March 2026 Flood Event required a significant operational response, with teams responding to more than 1,000 impacted locations across the region.”

As a result of the March 2026 flood event, Council has so far completed:

  • emergency formation grading works at 160 sites
  • crossing repairs at more than 55 locations
  • pothole patching at over 470 locations
  • drainage repairs at 150 locations
  • repairs to more than 30 damaged road signs.

“The November storms and March flood event shifted Council’s focus from planned maintenance works into emergency response and recovery operations at short notice – and the work to restore damaged roads is far from over. Cr Hartwig said.

“Despite the significant emergency response and recovery workload, Council has continued delivering essential maintenance works to keep communities connected and roads safe across the region.”

As recovery works continue, Council remains committed to delivering safe, reliable and resilient road networks across the Gympie region.

While Council is now focussed on developing the 2026/27 annual budget, Council teams are continuing to plan and deliver the projects endorsed this financial year.

Council is investing $10.87 million into roads maintenance in the 2025/26 financial year, and $10.49 million into disaster recovery works.
