Gympie Regional Gallery has been recognised with two honours at the Museums and Galleries Queensland Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards (GAMAA), announced on Wednesday, 9 September, at the Museum of Brisbane.
The Gallery was named Winner in the Engagement category for ‘Guy Denning: Works on Paper’ and received Highly Commended in the First Nations category for ‘Barambah Pottery: The Story Continues’.
Gympie Regional Council Mayor, Glen Hartwig, said the recognition was a proud moment for both the Gallery and the region. “To be acknowledged alongside leading state organisations speaks volumes about the quality of our exhibitions here in Gympie,” Cr. Hartwig said.
“The team, led by Gallery Director Kate Teed, continues to deliver bold and ambitious exhibitions that tell important local stories, create connections, and give our community opportunities to engage with art and culture in ways that inspire and challenge us.
“Achievements like this not only elevate the profile of arts and culture in our region but also contribute to the broader story of the Gympie region. “On behalf of Council and our community, I want to congratulate the entire Gallery team and everyone involved in both exhibitions on this outstanding achievement.”
The Gallery celebrated alongside other winning organisations including Queensland Museum Kurilpa, State Library of Queensland, Museum of Brisbane, and Qantas Founders Museum.
The Exhibitions:
Guy Denning: Works on Paper featured powerful sketches and life-sized paste-ups by international artist Guy Denning, exploring military history and social commentary while highlighting local stories and community connections through partnerships with the Gympie RSL, Veterans Centre and community member Wendy Carr.
Barambah Pottery: The Story Continues celebrated the rich heritage of Indigenous ceramic art from Cherbourg, bringing together historic and contemporary works with support from the Ration Shed Museum and local Barambah potters.
Both projects engaged diverse audiences and demonstrated the Gallery’s ability to create meaningful experiences through cross-industry collaboration and strong relationships with artists and community partners.
The Gympie Regional Gallery, located at 39 Nash Street, Gympie, offers free entry and is open Tuesday to Friday, 10am–4pm, and Saturday, 10am–2pm. For more information, visit https://www.gympie.qld.gov.au/Community/Arts-and-Culture/Gympie-Regional-Gallery
