Gympie Regional Council is continuing its commitment to delivering safe, reliable and future-focused essential services, with work now underway on a 3.9km water mains replacement project.

The project forms part of Council’s broader $27.3 million water infrastructure program allocated in this financial year’s budget.

Mayor Glen Hartwig said Council’s biggest challenge was managing aging infrastructure sustainably while also planning for growth.

“Water is an essential service that must be delivered safely and reliably every day, and Council remains committed to maintaining this standard while addressing the significant challenges presented by ageing infrastructure,” Cr Hartwig said.

“This financial year alone, Council officers have responded to 73 water main breaks, highlighting the scale of operational demands as well as the critical need for ongoing infrastructure renewal.”

“Council is taking action now, with a 3.9km water main replacement program currently underway across the region, while also investing in long-term strategic planning through our Water Security Strategy and our newly established Water Alliance partnership.”

Councils’ water main project will see the replacement of 3.9km of water mains in 12 priority areas in Gympie and the Cooloola Coast.

All scheduled works are expected to be completed by late 2026.

The project is jointly funded by Gympie Regional Council and the Queensland Government
