Gympie Council strengthens RV tourism opportunities across the region
Gympie Regional Council is positioning the region to capitalise on the growing demand for affordable family holidays by expanding accommodation options in key locations across the Gympie region.
At its Ordinary Meeting on 17 June, Council endorsed actions to expand the region’s network of RV parks, as part of the implementation of the Gympie Regional Council Recreational Vehicle Strategy for Council-owned or controlled land.
Originally adopted in 2020, the Strategy has now been reviewed, with updated recommendations aimed at progressing key actions to support expected growth in visitation associated with the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Mayor Glen Hartwig said the Gympie region was already recognised as a popular destination for RV travellers and Council was looking to build on that success.
"The Gympie region is an RV-friendly destination and we are perfectly positioned to attract travellers exploring Queensland's major tourism routes," Mayor Hartwig said.
“Nearly 87 per cent of all caravan and camping nights in Australia occur in regional areas, which highlights just how important destinations like the Gympie region are to the RV tourism market.
"RV tourism plays an important role in our local economy because these visitors don't just pass through. They stay in our towns, visit local attractions, eat at local cafes, stock up supplies from local businesses and often return again in the future.
"With the Olympic and Paralympic Games on the horizon, we have a unique opportunity to strengthen our tourism offering and ensure the Gympie region is ready to welcome more visitors."
The implementation strategy identifies opportunities to expand RV tourism infrastructure across the region through the development of three additional sites in Gympie, Tin Can Bay and Amamoor.
To progress these opportunities, Council supported the inclusion of the proposed RV park at the Gympie Showgrounds to be considered as part of the 2026/27 Budget, endorsed further investigation of a potential site in Tin Can Bay, and supported an Expression of Interest process for an RV park adjacent to the Amamoor Railway Station by the end of 2026.
The proposed Gympie Showgrounds RV park, located along Ramsey Road, would initially provide 35 RV sites, with capacity for a further 15 sites in the future.
Mayor Hartwig said the proposed sites would increase capacity while delivering broader economic and community benefits for the region.
"Projects like these represent a relatively small investment from Council but have the potential to deliver significant economic returns through increased visitation, visitor spending and site revenue," Mayor Hartwig said.
"It's a win-win for our region. We can provide a valuable service for travellers while creating opportunities for local businesses and supporting economic growth."
Council officers will now progress the endorsed actions and continue investigations into the proposed sites as part of the implementation strategy, with the development of the proposed Gympie RV park subject to funding being approved through Council's 2026/27 Budget adoption process.
