Thousands of residents and visitors are expected to turn out across the Gympie Region over the next three months as four Council-supported major events take centre stage from August to October.

From internationally-recognised music and film festivals to the return of an iconic regional celebration, the upcoming events showcase the depth and diversity of experiences that have helped establish the Gympie Region as one of Queensland’s leading regional tourism destinations.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said Council continued to support major events because of the significant economic, tourism and cultural benefits they delivered across the region.

“Council invests in major events each year through sponsorship agreements and the Community Grants Program because every visitor who stays longer and spends locally helps support local jobs, businesses and communities across the Gympie Region,” Mayor Hartwig said.

“We’ve already seen what that support can achieve through the success of recent events including the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, GourMay Mary Valley Food Festival and Accent Benchtops Rally Queensland, which attracted thousands of visitors and brought more customers through the doors of local accommodation providers, cafés, restaurants, retailers and tourism operators.

“But the benefits go well beyond the economic impact. These events give our local residents the opportunity to enjoy fantastic experiences closer to home while bringing our communities together to celebrate the traditions, culture and heritage that make the Gympie Region such a special place.”

Mayor Hartwig said there is much more to many of the upcoming events than what happens on the main event days.

“Organisers are creating additional experiences around their programs that give residents and visitors even more reasons to get involved and explore the region,” Mayor Hartwig said.

“The Gympie Music Muster is getting celebrations underway early with Muster on Mary on Friday 21 August, bringing free quality live music to Mary Street and Nelson Reserve in the lead-up to the festival, while Heart of Gold will feature activities including Solid Gold Gala and the Go Gold Block Party alongside its film program.

“The Gympie Gold Rush Festival, returning after seven years, is also extending the celebrations across October with events including its Community Street Parade, Prospector’s Cocktail Party and Bendigo Bank Community Concert.

“These additional experiences help build excitement around our major events, encourage visitors to stay longer and experience more of the Gympie Region, and ultimately grow the profile of both the events themselves and our region as a tourism destination.

“I encourage residents to get behind these fantastic events. Strong local support creates the atmosphere and excitement that helps these events grow, attract new audiences and strengthens the Gympie Region’s reputation as one of Queensland’s leading regional tourism destinations.”
