Council keeps public spaces clean and green

Gympie Regional Council is ensuring the region’s green spaces are safe, accessible, and inviting through its annual mowing and slashing program.
Delivered by a combination of Council staff and contractors, Council’s Open Space Team mows more than 4,083 hectares of parkland, which is equivalent to more than 6,000 rugby league playing fields.
Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said mowing and slashing was a core Council service that ensured the region was safe and looking its best.
“Every day our crews are out and about across the Gympie Region working hard to look after our open spaces and natural areas, which is a big part of our region’s identity and natural beauty,” Cr Hartwig said.
“Every week or fortnight, our staff are also out there caring for our gardens which covers an area size of about 10 footy fields.”
Cr Hartwig said the program was scheduled to keep pace with growing rates, with service levels generally doubling throughout the wet months.
“Between around November and March our region tends to experience increased rainfall and strong growing conditions, and this is factored into our planning to so we can do our best to manage growth,” he said.
“As we know when the ground is wet, it’s not always possible to jump in and mow straight away, so the team is always keeping a close eye on the schedule and will move crews around based on the conditions.
“Our parks and gardens crews are some of the most visible Council teams, and I encourage the community to give them a wave next time you see them out and about looking after our region.”
Cr Hartwig said while Council was currently focussed on preparing the 2026/2027 budget Council was getting on with the job of completing the program for this financial year.
