Community ideas to shape key projects in the CBD

Gympie residents are being invited to contribute to plans for key community spaces as part of Gympie Regional Council’s rollout of priority improvement projects in the CBD.
The projects are part of the 25/26 $94 million Capital Works Program. They include the planning and design of a playground at Nelson Reserve to replace the current playground and the expansion of Memorial Lane between Reef Street and Mary Street.
Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said the design and construction projects were key to Council’s continued focus on delivering safe community facilities and vibrant precincts.
“Over the coming months, while Councillors focus on developing a 26/27 Budget that continues to deliver value for money, our teams will be on the ground chatting to residents, community groups, schools, and business owners to deliver the projects that were endorsed this financial year, “ Mayor Hartwig said
“That includes ensuring that our community has the opportunity to both consider what they love about the projects being planned for public spaces in the CBD precinct, and to provide feedback via a range of options including surveys available online and at key Council locations.
“The input will inform the longer–term concept design for Nelson Reserve, the detailed design for the construction of a new playground to replace the current one at the Reserve’s Apex Playground, and thanks to some state Government Funding, the planned improvements to Memorial Lane. This third project will also include some small-scale improvements to the area nearby to address safety concerns.
“With these separate but connected projects aimed at improving the CBD precinct, the community is encouraged to take a big picture look and have a say.”
Division Four Councillor Mick Curran said the projects presented a unique opportunity to check in with the community and create a clear roadmap for some of Gympie’s most prominent locations.
“Our Gympie town centre represents our unique identity and long-standing history, and this project is about understanding our community’s ideas for these well-used community assets at this point in time and then using this feedback to inform our future plans for the area,” Cr Curran said.
“Nelson Reserve and the Apex Playground are some of the region’s most popular and iconic public spaces, enjoyed by thousands of residents, groups, families, and visitors every year.
“This process gives us an exciting opportunity to explore what might be possible for the area, explore opportunities to improve safety, accessibility, and useability.
“I encourage everyone to get involved in the upcoming community workshops and sessions and have your say.”
Mayor Hartwig said while Councillors were now focussing on developing the 2026/27 annual budget, Council teams were continuing to plan and deliver the projects endorsed this financial year.
