Gympie Civic Centre receives $11 million funding boost

Gympie Regional Council’s Civic Centre renewal project has received a significant funding boost, with the Australian Government providing $11 million towards the works. 

Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain MP announced this week that Gympie Regional Council was successful in securing the funding through the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP). 

Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig said the funding was significant and extremely welcome.

“The Civic Centre has long been at the heart of our cultural, community and civic life and this investment will help ensure it can once again be a place where people come together to connect, celebrate and participate,” Mayor Hartwig said. 

“The Australian Government’s $11 million contribution will not only see this much needed facility reopen its doors next year but also reduce Council’s contribution to $10.7 million, rather than the $21.7m allocated as part of the 2026/27 budget.” 

Background

The Civic Centre was damaged during the 2022 rain and flood event which affected the Gympie region. The Civic Centre’s lower floor was inundated by flash flooding from Nash Gully and the surrounding stormwater networks which were unable to cope with the heavy downpours experienced during the disaster event. Contaminated water entering the building, combined with continued unfavourable weather conditions, contributed to mould spreading throughout the centre via the air-conditioning system. The resulting damage caused a significant setback to the renewal project. 

Demolition works are underway on site, with reconstruction and renewal activities expected to commence in coming months.  

The Civic Centre is planned to reopen mid 2027.
