Better Walks Ahead: Restoration Works to Enhance Local Trail
Published on 06 June 2025
Residents and visitors to the Gympie Region are set to benefit from the restoration works commencing at the end of June on the Imbil to Brooloo section of the Mary Valley Rail Trail (MVRT).
During the 2022 floods, sections of the popular MVRT were damaged. After subsequent restoration works to some sections of the trail in 2023, it was determined that there were additional works required to ensure the trail could continue to be enjoyed well into the future.
Three work sites will be established with construction starting at Site 1, and progressing to sites 2 and 3, respectively. During this time, crews will be carrying out a range of works including installing new drainage pipes and headwalls, repairing the track and embankments, and pavement and culvert work.
For public safety reasons, the closed portion of the trail will remain closed for the entirety of the works, but the public will still be able to utilise the 1.6km of trail on either side of the closure.
Gympie Regional Council Mayor Glen Hartwig spoke about the final completion of the restoration of the trail and what benefits these works will bring to the popular trail.
“The Mary Valley Rail Trail has always been an important and much-loved feature of the region for our residents and tourists alike,” Cr Hartwig said.
“This much needed project will allow us to finally restore the trail and offer a much better, more suitable, safer experience for users.
“April 2023 was the last time the trail saw partial flood restoration works, so these upcoming works will be the final, long-awaited piece in this puzzle.
“We appreciate the community’s patience and thank the Australian Government for their support in funding these critical improvements.”
These works are expected to finish by the end of August, weather permitting. Users are asked to take note of the signage and fencing in place.
These works are made possible by the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
