Nelson Reserve is set to become a key destination with the addition of the regional level Gympie Youth Precinct Recreation Hub at the old Gympie Memorial Pool site. This exciting project responds to the growing needs of the Gympie community and its youth by supporting positive community, health and youth engagement opportunities within the region.
The Gympie Youth Precinct Recreation Hub will be built at the old Gympie Memorial Pool site, within Nelson’s Reserve (Gympie Town Centre).
Scope of works
Stage 1 of the Youth Precinct design comprises of:
- Bouldering wall for low height climbing. This is an all ages activity which encourages young people to challenge one another, build physical strength and make friends.
- Pump track. During preliminary community engagement, the pump track was the most requested element for the new precinct. Youth will be able to use the track to skate, scoot and BMX train.
- Skate Bowl and flow area. This competition-grade bowl will be ideal for competitions, spectating and skating. The surrounding flow areas will allow beginner skaters to develop new skills.
- Basic Rectification of the Existing Pool Building. Toilets, shaded areas, and storage will be retained from the existing building for the new area.
Budget and funding
Stage 1 of this project is costed at $2.8 million, funded under a shared (50/50) funding arrangement with the State Government. Detailed design is now underway, with a forecast completion date for the project of mid-2019.
Minor demolition works in preparation for Stage 1 of the Gympie Youth Precinct Recreational Hub is due to begin in the coming months, at the site of the now-vacant Gympie Memorial Pool. Detailed design will be progressed in 2018 based on the endorsed concept design.
The project has been carefully considered to deliver cost effective design solutions that have regard to the site constraints and opportunities, the potential impacts of flooding, community safety, and the need to integrate with the surrounding urban area.
