Christmas is only a few sleeps away and I’m sure the big man is packing the sled as we speak. For me, Christmas is a time to be thankful.  I am thankful for many things in my life; there is no doubt our community is one of the best in the country, and our region is one of the most beautiful in Australia. I am thankful for my health, my friends and I am thankful for my family.

It can also be a stressful time of year. Although you may have completed your Christmas shopping, perhaps you’ve forgotten that one present or maybe accidentally missed Aunt Marge. If like myself you haven’t finished your shopping, please support our local traders across the region. We have a wonderful variety of shops and it’s important for our community to support our local businesses who deliver great products, friendly service and support local employment and economic growth.

We must also acknowledge that although it is a happy time for many, it’s also a tough time for some. For those of us who are fortunate and privileged, we are able to afford that Christmas dinner or buy that present for Mum or Dad. But this isn’t the case for some; Christmas can be a challenging time and sometimes a lonely one. We have amazing volunteers and community services who offer support with care packages and meals such as the Christmas Lunch at the Civic Centre. Thank you to these people who support our most vulnerable.

Christmas is also a busy time on our roads; please be careful and drive to the conditions - take an extra 10 minutes to get where you need to go - no one wants to lose a loved one over the Christmas period, or at any time.

From everyone at Gympie Regional Council, Merry Christmas to you all and a very happy and safe New Year.

Mayor Mick Curran
