Tracks and trails

The Gympie region provides a unique and diverse environment, providing significant opportunities for outdoor recreation for both local residents and visitors. While the area already provides a great variety of recreation tracks and trails within public lands, the opportunity exists to enhance this to provide additional recreation, tourism and economic benefits. The Gympie region provides regionally significant trails including (part of) the Cooloola Great Walk and Bicentennial National Trail, as well as more localised networks such as the Victory Heights Trail Network.

Rail Trails

Rail Trails are identified within the Gympie Regional Council Tracks and Trail Plan as priority outdoor recreation projects, to capitalise on opportunities for re-use of past rail corridors which have had their primary use discontinued. Recreation opportunities exist for bushwalkers, mountain bikers and horse riders to experience the Gympie Region in a unique way, and also appreciate the history of these corridors at the same time. Two rail trail projects have been identified within the Gympie Regional Council area, between Kilkivan and Kingaroy in the western region, and between Imbil and Brooloo in the Mary Valley. Visit the rail trails project page to find out more.

Tracks and Trails Plan

The Tracks and Trails Plan has a focus on bushwalking, mountain biking and horse riding. The aims of the Plan are to:

  • increase the supply of formal trails across the region;
  • increase the provision of information for a comprehensive trail network;
  • enable locals and visitors alike to readily access natural recreation opportunities; and
  • promote existing tracks and trails in the region, whilst delivering new tracks and trails as opportunities arise.
