Disposing of Asbestos

Gympie Regional Council offers disposal of asbestos containing material (ACM) in non-commercial amounts.

We offer this service at our Bonnick Road Waste Management Facility between 8am and 3pm on weekdays. This service is by appointment only so please call 1300 307 800 to arrange a time. Charges apply for the disposal of ACM.

Please note that asbestos removal is very hazardous. We strongly recommend that DIY renovators hire a licensed operator to assist them. This will avoid long-term health risks to themselves or future occupants.

    1. Please bag or wrap the asbestos in plastic and then tape it up.  These parcels need to be small enough so that you can remove them from your vehicle without help.
    2. Amounts over 175kg are considered commercial. These require a waste tracking certificate and need to be managed by a licenced asbestos transporter. Please contact the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation for more information regarding asbestos management and transporting obligations.
    3. When you arrive at Bonnick Road, let our gatehouse attendant know why you are there. They will then direct you to the disposal location.
    4. Let the on-site plant operator know you are there and they will give you further instructions.
    5. When you have finished unloading please move away from the area. This is so the plant operator can safely bury the waste.

Please see specific requirements for preparing the asbestos waste in the sections below

  • Below are the requirements for bagged asbestos waste:

    • All asbestos must be in heavy-duty polyethylene bags.
    • The bags need to be at least 0.2mm thick and no more than 50 per cent full.
    • The bag can't be longer that 1200mm or wider than 900mm
    • Please spray the asbestos waste with water or a sealant before bagging.
    • Each bag must have a notice attached to the outside with the words:
      • Caution asbestos
      • Avoid creating dust
      • Serious Inhalation
      • Health Hazard
  • Below are the requirements for wrapped asbestos waste:

    • Solid asbestos sheet waste must have the polyethylene sheeting wrapped and sealed around it.
    • Each wrapped bundle must be no more than 2400mm long and 900mm wide.
    • If your sheeting is less than 0.2mm thick you will need to double wrap it.
    • Please spray the asbestos waste with water or a sealant before bagging.
    • Bundles must be tightly wrapped so they won't come apart while unloading or burying.
    • Each bundle must have a notice attached to the outside with the words:
      • Caution asbestos
      • Avoid creating dust
      • Serious Inhalation
      • Health Hazard
    • Only asbestos waste from the Gympie region will be accepted.
    • Council reserves the right to refuse disposal of large amounts of asbestos waste.
    • We may ask that the waste is taken to a disposal facility outside the region.
    • Your waste load will be inspected on arrival at Bonnick Road.
    • You must be able to unload your waste using manual or mechanical means.
    • You are not allowed to use gravity to unload the waste as this can lead to damage.
    • If you arrive in a 'skip' or tilt tray vehicle you will need to confirm that you won't unload the waste using gravity. If you can't show us this, you won't be able to continue.
    • No help with unloading is available from Council staff.
    • Bad weather may mean we ask you to reschedule your drop off time.
    • An authorised Council officer must supervise the disposal.
