Gold City Stage car park closed

Gold City Stage Car Park in Nash Street has been closed until further notice.

Over the long weekend, panels on the third level were vandalised and kicked in. These specific panels may contain asbestos and have been sent for testing with results expected in the next 24 hours.

The panels will be replaced and a work schedule produced, however until the testing results are returned, council do not have a confirmed date for reopening of the car park.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

This weekend is the annual Gold Rush Festival, which is a celebration of our history as the ‘town that saved Queensland.’

The festival kicks off with a parade on Friday night. This is a change from previous parades and we are very much looking forward to the illuminated paper lanterns and floats as they make their way down Mary Street from 7pm, with a number of local schools involved creating and building their own lanterns. I recommend getting there early to ensure you don’t miss out.

It will be a great event to watch and a great way to support our local community. Once you’ve enjoyed the parade, there will be live entertainment, food vans, street performers and kids rides in Mary street until 9pm.

Saturday is the Gold Rush Carnival from 2pm at Lake Alford and the Gold Mining Museum. There will be markets, two stages of live music, vintage games, a beard competition, and rides. Saturday night will be one not to miss with the Gold Rush Festival Carnival Fire Event from 7pm. Not to mention the fireworks. And just a reminder to keep our pets inside and safe.

These community events delivered by Council are a great way to connect and enjoy all we have to offer, showcasing both our history and our region. For the full program, head to the council website.

Last Saturday night I was honoured to attend and present at the Gympie Chamber of Commerce Business Awards at the Civic Centre. Congratulations to the Business of the Year, Hair Review, and to all those who not only received an award, but were nominated. Congratulations must also go to the Gympie Chamber of Commerce for their work organising and running such a great event.

See you all at the Gold Rush Festival!

Mayor Mick Curran
