Facility closures

Southside Waste Transfer Station

The Southside Waste Transfer Station has permanently closed from Saturday, 1 July 2017. The Southside Waste Transfer Station is located on the former Southside Landfill site.

The decision to close the Southside Waste Transfer Station was due to the necessity to rehabilitate the landfill.

Council will be undertaking remediation of the landfill at a cost of $1.6 million.

Landfill remediation is a mandatory post-closure procedure carried out to isolate the deposited wastes from an outside environment, mainly water.

The landfill will be reshaped as part of the rehabilitation works to an environmentally engineered design.

Relocating the buried waste onsite will significantly reduce the flat area on top of the landfill mound, and this area will no longer be large enough to accommodate the waste transfer station.

Waste disposal

Kerbside collection services will be available to residents in the surrounding area to minimise reliance on waste management facilities for regular disposal of household waste.

Other waste and recycables can be delivered to the Gympie Landfill in Bonnick Road, less than 10 minutes from the Southside Waste Management Facility.

Alternatively, Widgee and Mary Valley residents can deliver also waste to the Widgee Waste Transfer Station or the Mary Valley Waste Transfer Station.

Traveston Waste Transfer Station

The Traveston Waste Transfer Station has permanently closed from Saturday, 1 July 2017.

The decision to close the Traveston Waste Transfer Station was due to a number of other waste transfer stations being within close proximity to it.

Waste disposal

Kerbside collection services will be available to residents in the surrounding area to  minimise  reliance on waste management facilities for regular disposal of household waste.
