A Message from the Mayor

There is an old saying, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough get going,’ and if what I observed over the last couple of days is anything to go by, the people of our region are as tough and resilient as they come.

Heavy rainfall in our region in recent days led to heavy flooding which, has in turn led to heavy damage to some of our infrastructure.

This infrastructure of course will be replaced, in time.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the individuals, families, businesses, community groups, and landholders in our region who are currently going through what I can only assume is an extremely tough time. Please know you have the support of Gympie Regional Council.

Council’s recovery effort is now in full swing. We have crews throughout the region assessing damage and inspecting infrastructure, testing water quality, collecting flood-related waste, and cleaning up public spaces.

For those of you who are in more remote locations, we have set up an email address to send through images and details of flood-related damage: floodingdamage@gympie.qld.gov.au.

We will log these and get to them when we can.

I want to take this opportunity to publicly thank members of our organisation, the emergency service community, volunteers, and residents of the region who have gone above and beyond over the past couple of days in their efforts to assist us during this event. On behalf of myself and Council, thank you.

I would like to also pass on my appreciation to council staff who operated our disaster management centre over the weekend as well as those staff who will continue to work on the front lines for the weeks to come. There is still a tremendous amount of work to do but its important residents know they are in safe and capable hands.

COVID-19 is obviously still a big issue. We as a nation, but more specifically as a state, are continuing to deal with the effects of this pandemic. Our community has not gone untouched. Please remember to follow the state health advice in relation to social distancing and mask-wearing.

Mayor Glen Hartwig
