LANDOWNERS in the Gympie region should be aware of the dangers posed by parthenium weed. If not controlled on all properties, this weed has the potential to negatively impact property values and affect the health of livestock and people.

Gympie Regional Council's Lands Protection Unit is involved in implementing a program to assist landholders to control parthenium and has mailed information packages to known parthenium-affected landholders within these catchments to assist with the control of the harmful weed.

Parthenium is a Class 2 declared weed in Queensland; so landholders are required to control parthenium on their land.

Due to the potential for parthenium to spread throughout the region, council is asking landholders to assist by controlling parthenium and reporting outbreaks on their properties.

There are a number of ways to treat parthenium weed, from mechanical to chemical or biological control measures, so it is important to get the right advice.
